Four proposals for dredging of old Brahmaputra approved

The Cabinet Committee on Government Purchase has approved four proposals for dredging the old Brahmaputra river to enhance the draft with the ultimate goal of facilitating seamless cargo transportation on the waterways.

The approval for the proposals on Wednesday was given under the "Navigability Improve-ment and Excavation of old Brahmaputra, Dharla, Tulai, and Punarbhava" project, which involves a cost of Tk 3.33 billion.

The meeting, held at the Ministry of Finance, was presided over by Finance Minister AHM Mustafa Kamal.

In a press briefing following the meeting, Sayed Mahbub Khan, additional secretary of the Cabinet Division, said that the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority is responsible for implementing the dredging project.

Tasked with carrying out the dredging works are SS Engineering and Construction Ltd, a joint venture of Spectra Engineers Ltd and Castle Construction Co Ltd, Orient Trading and Builders Ltd, and another joint venture of Sonali and NDE.

Moreover, the cabinet committee also approved a cost-variation proposal placed by the Chittagong Development Authority (CDA) for the construction of a link road in Chattogram, further bolstering the infrastructural development of the region.
