Govt confirms 52 deaths from dengue

The Institute of Epidemiology Disease Control and Research (IEDCR) has received 173 suspected death reports from dengue infections from different hospitals across the country.

And, after examining 88 of those cases, the government agency confirmed 52 death cases from the mosquito borne disease, reveals Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) on Tuesday.    

In the meantime, according to a UNB report, three more people died of dengue in Dhaka, Jhenaidah and Rangpur districts.

In Dhaka, Md Zisan, 18, son of Billal Hossain of Joydebpur upazila in Gazipur, died of dengue disease at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) in the morning.

In Rangpur, another young man died of dengue at Rangpur Medical College Hospital. The deceased was identified as Mahtab Uddin, 24, of Biralupazila in Dinajpur.

In Jhenaidah, Sufia Begum, wife of Abdur Rahim of Baniria in Kaliganj upazila, died after being diagnosed with the mosquito-borne disease at Kaliganj upazila health complex.

Besides, some 1,299 new dengue patients have been hospitalised in the 24 hours until Tuesday morning taking the infected toll to 66,064, according to the DGHS.

Among the total number 608 were admitted in Dhaka city and 691 were admitted to rest parts of the country, it added.

The death toll reached to 52 according to the government data whereas local media reported over 100 death cases from dengue disease.

Of the total, the Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) admitted the highest number of 108 patients.

DGHS data also showed that August has already broken all previous records of dengue infections in a single month affecting 47,603 people until Tuesday.

Among the total, 60,559 people in Dhaka got released from hospital as of Friday morning.

Chattogram is the second most dengue affected area after Dhaka city.

WHO said there is no specific treatment for the viral fever but early detection and proper medication can lowers fatality rates below one per cent.

Besides, cleanness and awareness are the pre-measures essential to fight the disease.
