Members of Parliament (MPs) will now be provided with dedicated, well-furnished spaces at Upazila Parishad complexes to facilitate their official work within their constituencies.
The Local Government Division issued a directive on Tuesday to set up these spaces, officially designated as “inspection rooms”, bdnews24.com reports.
According to the order, for existing Upazila Parishad complexes, a room on the first floor must be prepared with high-quality furniture and washroom facilities.
For new complexes currently under construction or planning, the design must include such a room on the first floor.
State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives Mir Shahe Alam shared the development during the discussion on a motion of thanks to the president’s address in parliament on Tuesday.
He noted that the move follows a complaint from an MP over the lack of seating space for lawmakers during visits to Upazila offices.
“Prime Minister Tarique Rahman directed us to take necessary measures, and the government order was issued today,” the state minister said.
He said the rooms would be called “inspection rooms” as there is no legal provision for allocating rooms in the name of MPs.
If a constituency spans multiple Upazilas, a room will be allocated in each.
The costs will be met from ADP allocations, revenue funds or project funds of the Upazila administration.
The state minister added that whether in new or old buildings, the rooms will be prepared as soon as possible.
