Government plans one-stop services, higher loan limit for migrant workers

The government is planning to introduce a one-stop service to reduce harassment faced by migrant workers and raise the loan ceiling to Tk 500,000 for those seeking overseas jobs and returnees.

Expatriates’ Welfare State Minister Nurul Haque Nur outlined the plans to journalists on Monday after discussions on the ministry at the Deputy Commissioners’ (DC) Conference.

Highlighting a 180-day roadmap, he said the initiative aligns with the prime minister’s directives and the government’s election manifesto to ensure hassle-free services for expatriates.

 “Our key goals include reducing migration costs and ensuring a one-stop solution for expatriates,” he said.

The four-day DC Conference began on Sunday, bringing together officials from across the country.

The event serves as a platform for direct coordination between the government and field administration.

Deputy commissioners also get the opportunity to meet and exchange views with the president, prime minister and chief justice during the conference.

This is the first such conference since the BNP formed the government on Feb 17 following a landslide victory in the national election.

During discussions, deputy commissioners proposed bringing all services for expatriates under a single platform.

Addressing longstanding complaints over passport-related harassment, the state minister said discussions have been held with the home ministry.

 “Once initial procedures are completed at district manpower offices, a special desk will be set up at passport offices for expatriates so they can receive services quickly,” he said.
