Internet disruption likely between April 9 and 13 due to submarine cable repair

Internet services in Bangladesh may experience temporary disruption between 9 April and 13 April due to maintenance work on the SEA-ME-WE-5 (SMW5) submarine cable, according to a circular issued by Bangladesh Submarine Cables PLC.

The company said the interruption is linked to the repair of a “shunt fault” in the SMW5 system, one of the country’s primary international connectivity infrastructures.

During the repair period, international internet traffic is expected to be affected, which may result in slower speeds or intermittent connectivity for users across the country.

To minimise the impact, traffic will be partially rerouted through the SEA-ME-WE-4 (SMW4) submarine cable. However, due to limited backup capacity, full service continuity cannot be guaranteed.

BSCPLC has advised users and service providers to remain prepared for possible disruptions during the maintenance window.

The company also expressed regret for the inconvenience and said efforts are underway to complete the repair work within the scheduled timeframe.
