Myanmar agrees to take back 6,500 trapped Rohingyas

Myanmar authorities have assured Bangladesh that it would take back 6,500 Rohingyas trapped in the no-man's-land between Bangladesh and Myanmar.

The assurance was made at a high-level meeting between Bangladesh and Myanmar on Tuesday, sources said.

They said officials from Bangladesh and Myanmar held a three-hour meeting at Thang Pai Luti area of Myanmar side on the day to discuss about repatriation of the trapped Rohingyas in Konar Para no-man's-land. Divisional commissioner of Chittagong Abdul Mannan led the 12-member delegation of Bangladesh and deputy commissioner of Mongdaw district led the 12-member Myanmar delegation.

After the meeting, Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commissioner (RRRC) in Cox's Bazar Mohammed Abul Kalam told this correspondent that "Myanmar officials assured us that they will take initiatives to take back 6,500 trapped Rohingyas from the no-man's-land. But they gave no confirmation about this matter."

On the other hand, Myanmar officials refused the news of burning dwelling houses in Tumbru area on Monday, Mr Abul Kalam said.

Cox's Bazar deputy commissioner Md Ali Hossain, police super Mohammad Iqbal Hossain and Bandarban deputy commissioner Dilip Kumar Bonik were also present at the meeting.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh handed over to Myanmar recently a list of 1,637 Rohingya families comprised of 8,032 people to start the first phase of repatriation of the displaced Rohingyas to their homeland in Rakhine state.
