National Justice Coordination Committee gets shape to ensure justice

Law Ministry has formed a body in association with UNDP predominantly to ensure justice to the justice-seekers through quick disposal of cases.

The body titled ‘National Justice Coordination Committee’ (NJCC) was launched following the huge backlog of cases across the country.

The launching event was arranged at the Bangabandhu International Conference Centre (BICC) in the capital on Tuesday.

Law Minister Anisul Huq declared inaugurated the committee as the chief guest with Legislative and Parliamentary Affairs Senior Secretary Mohammad Shahidul Haque in the chair.

Appellate Division Registrar Md Zakir Hossain, Additional IGP (Admin) of police Md Mokhlesur Rahman, IG (Prisons) Syed Iftekhar Uddin and Country Director of UNDP Bangladesh Sudipto Mukerjee , among others, were present.

The committee would be the first foundational step to pave the way for overall strategy and investment plan covering the country’s entire justice sector.

It will function as an oversight and advisory body for the whole justice sector as well as to lead the country’s strategic reform process.

Sources in the ministry said a total of 33,09,789 cases are now pending with higher and lower courts up to December 31, 2017.

Out of the total, 28,16,474 are pending with the lower courts, 4,76,750 more with the High Court division and 16,565 with the Appellate Division of the SC.
