The government will enact a new law to help prevent forgery of land documents for reducing public sufferings and giving faster service to genuine land owners, said a top official of the Ministry of Law (MoL) on Monday.

As part of the move, the MoL has started preparing a draft of the proposed law.

"We will enact a new law to help prevent forgery of land deeds or documents - aiming to reduce sufferings and give faster service to genuine land owners," Secretary of the MoL Md Mustafizur Rahman said.

He was presiding over a workshop on the proposed law at Bangladesh Secretariat on the day.

The land officials, who participated in the workshop, shared their personal field-level experiences and put forward recommendations to help check land-related irregularities.

They said such irregularities were being done through various means, like - making false documents or deeds, usurpation or encroachment of 'khas' land and river banks, and grabbing land by influential quarters.

The land secretary directed the officials concerned to take into consideration the recommendations, provided by the stakeholders at grassroots-level (land owners), while preparing the draft law.

Additional secretaries of the MoL Md Masud Karim, Muhammad Salehuddin and Prodip Kumar Das, prominent lawyer of Bangladesh Supreme Court Md Younus Akhteruzzaman, and additional deputy commissioners (ADCs) and assistant commissioners (AC Land) of some districts and upazilas participated in the workshop, among others.
