Bangladesh Railway (BR) is set to introduce a new train service between Dhaka and Tarakandi in Jamalpur and inaugurate newly installed tracks in Pabna and Faridpur next month.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will inaugurate the train and 53 km of new tracks developed on Pabna-Dhalar Char and 31 kilometres (kms) of tracks from Faridpur to Bhanga on January 26 through videoconferencing, officials said.

The new train will reduce the journey time significantly as it will run between Dhaka and Tarakandi via Bangabandhu Bridge, they said.

The train is being introduced following the improvement of the railway's carriage capacity, they added.

Earlier, the BR inaugurated 25 kms of tracks between Pabna and Ishwardi.

On the same day, all coaches of one of the two trains running on Sylhet-Chattogram route will be replaced with new ones. The coaches of the other train will also be replaced after arrival of more coaches.

According to BR, the western zone has 696.40 kms of metre-gauge track, 1029.1 kms of broad-gauge track and 464.29 kms of dual-gauge track. This year BR has introduced four trains -- Banalata Express on Dhaka-Chapainawabganj route, Panchagarh Express on Dhaka-Panchagarh route, Benapole Express on Dhaka-Benapole and Kurigram Express on Dhaka-Kurigram route.
