Police at all levels have been instructed not to harass or arrest anyone even if cases are filed against them, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Baharul Alam said on Monday.
Action will only be taken if investigations find them responsible, he told a press conference at the Foreign Service Academy in Dhaka.
Responding to a question about harassment through case filings, the IGP said, "Cases are not false; cases are genuine. However, we cannot fully stop the practice of inflating the number of accused. Besides, we have also legal limitations about this.
He said that following August 5, it was observed that while crimes may have been committed by five to ten people, cases were sometimes filed naming up to 300 people, with ill motives such as extortion, harassment, or intimidation.
"We want to end the practice of harassing people through case filings," he said. "For this reason, I have personally contacted police stations multiple times."
The IGP urged people to inform senior police officials if they face harassment through such cases.
"It is my request to the countrymen: Please help us find our faults," he said. "However, we must not be requested to do anything wrong."
