Coming down heavily on the proposed budget, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said on Saturday the government did a mockery with the people in the name of budget.
He said the budget for the fiscal year (FY) 2023-24 is neither a pro-poor nor a pro-people one.
Mirza Fakhrul made the observations at a rally held in front of the party's central office in the capital's Naya Paltan area.
He reiterated his party's demand for the government's resignation without any further delay.
"You (the government) have still time to quit power and hold free and fair national elections under a neutral caretaker government," he said.
He accused the government of keeping away BNP leaders from politics by filing false cases against them.
The BNP secretary general warned that the government could not suppress the ongoing anti-government movement by filing false cases and meting out punishment to the party leaders and activists.
He alleged that the government is trying to make a score in the open field of election by keeping the opponent leaders in jail in false cases.
He said people of the country have awakened and the government could not materialise its dream to hold on to power by filing false cases against BNP leaders.
BNP Standing Committee Member Mirza Abbas said the people of the country have awakened and the government would not get scope to escape.
Another standing committee member of the party Gayeshwar Chandra Roy said the secretary general of BNP will announce new programmes for final movement to topple the government within the next four to five days.
Meanwhile, Mirza Fakhurl in a statement issued on Saturday condemned the attack on BNP leaders and activists at a doa mahfil at Rupganj in Narayanaganj.
He warned that the government could not suppress their ongoing movement by attacking party leaders and activists.
He demanded immediate arrest of those involved in the attack.
Meanwhile, UNB adds: Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said the new visa policy announced by the USA for Bangladesh is disgraceful for the nation as it has revealed to the entire world that there is no democracy, human rights and the rule of law in the country.
"They (govt) have become unnerved (by the US visa policy). They're trying to say it's not their problem. Then, why did the visa policy come...the visa policy that the United States has announced is not graceful for us as a nation," he said.
