Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) acting chairman Tarique Rahman has called upon the interim government to take initiatives for rehabilitation of the flood-affected people in five northern districts.
He has also urged the government to take measures to help prevent riverbank erosion.
He made the call in a statement sent by BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi to the media on Monday.
It said that heavy rainfall and onrush water (from India) caused flash floods in the River Teesta basin areas, including Lalmonirhat, Nilphamari, Rangpur, Kurigram and Gaibandha districts.
It said that the rivers, including the Teesta, in those districts were flowing above the danger level and thus marooned many people of flood water.
"The flood affected people have been passing days with abject conditions. They are now in constant fear and frustration. Roads and crops are being submerged," said Mr Tarique.
"I call upon BNP leaders and activists to help the flood victims."
"I also sincerely request the interim government to take steps for distributing relief materials to the flood victims and preventing riverbank erosion," he added.
Meanwhile, BNP will put forward its own recommendations to the six commissions entrusted for bringing about state reforms as per the directives of the interim government.
BNP standing committee member Salahuddin Ahmed disclosed the development to the media after paying tribute and offered doa at the grave of party founder Ziaur Rahman marking 45th founding anniversary of Jatiyatabadi Ulema Dal at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in the capital.
The interim government has formed six reform commissions. The formations of the committees are yet to be completed. The commissions will work from first October, he said.
"We (BNP) hope we will put forward some recommendations to the commissions for state reforms. We will go to the commissions whether they (commissions) call us or not."
He said the communal harmony will remain intake in the country.
"We are all Bangladeshi citizens and will enjoy our rights equally. There will be no minority or majority issue in the country. We all will build Bangladesh following the resignation of fascist Sheikh Hasina," he continued.
"The ouster autocratic ruler (Sheikh Hasina) sitting abroad (India) is hatching conspiracies against Bangladesh. Various types of conspiracies are being hatched as the collaborators of the ousted fascist (Sheikh Hasina) are still at different positions of the country and they will try to destabilise the country," he stated.
"We strongly believe that the patriotic people of the country will not let it happen and accept," he added.
Among others, BNP chairperson's adviser Zainul Abdin Farroque and Ulema Dal leaders were present.
