Awami League (AL) has started the sale of nomination forms among those who want to contest the first-phase upazila elections to be held on March 10 on party tickets.

The sale of nomination forms started at the Awami League President Sheikh Hasina's political office at Dhanmondi on Monday morning.

Asadul Haque, an aspirant from Kendua Upazilla of Netrokona district, purchased the first nomination paper for the chairman post on the day.

AL general secretary Obaidul inaugurated the sale of the nomination papers, reports UNB.

He said the local government election steering committee will announce the names of the AL nominated candidates on February 8.

According to the Election Commission, elections to 87 upazila parishads will be held on March 10 in the first phase.

The last date for submitting nomination papers is February 11 while that of withdrawal is February 19.

EC Secretary Helal Uddin Ahmed unveiled the schedule for the first-phase upazila elections at a press conference at the Nirbachan Bhaban on Sunday.

Earlier, the Commission said the fifth upazila parishad elections will be held in five phases from March while in 2014, elections in 487 upazilas were held in six phases between February and May.

According to electoral law, election to any upazila council has to take place at least six months before the tenure of the local government body expires.
