US ambassador meets leader of the opposition in Bangladesh parliament

The United States Ambassador to Bangladesh, Brent T. Christensen, paid a courtesy call on the Leader of the Opposition in the Bangladesh National Parliament, Md. Shafiqur Rahman, on Tuesday.
The meeting was held at the Office of the Leader of the Opposition in the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban, where the two sides held fruitful discussions on a range of issues of mutual interest concerning Bangladesh and the United States.
Also present at the meeting were Eric Geelan, Political and Economic Counsellor at the US Embassy in Dhaka, and Hermanoschy Bernard, Political Officer.
During the exchange of views, the participants discussed Bangladesh’s political and economic situation in the post-election period, the upcoming national budget, prospects for expanding bilateral trade and investment, and various aspects of Bangladesh-US relations.
The discussions also focused on the development of democratic institutions, the promotion of good governance, strengthening economic cooperation, and a number of contemporary regional and international issues.
Both sides expressed their expectation that the existing relationship between Bangladesh and the United States would be further strengthened on the basis of mutual respect, trust, and cooperation.
Barrister Mir Ahmad Bin Kasem Arman, Foreign Affairs Adviser to the Leader of the Opposition, and Ali Ahmed Mabrur, a member of the party’s Foreign Affairs Advisory Team, were also present at the meeting.
