Satellite fire station at Babubazar bridge a possibility: Mayor

Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Mayor indicated that a satellite fire station near the Babubazar bridge can be established for taking rapid action against fire.

The mayor came up with the remark on Saturday while speaking while speaking as a Chief Guest at the function titled "Safe Chemical Management System: Post Chawkbazar Preparations".

The event was organised by Dhaka Chamber of Commerce & Industry (DCCI) and held at the office of the institution.  

Khokon also said the government is going to establish a 'Chemical Polli' under BEZA at Sirajdikhan, Munshigonj soon.

The mayor requested the Fire Service and Civil Defence to investigate the recent fire incidents.

Speaking at the event, DCCI President and chairperson of the meeting, Osama Taseer said that the demand of chemical in the country is increasing at a rate of 8.0 per cent per year.

Currently the demand of chemicals stands around $2.5 billion per year, said Taseer adding that about 800 types of chemicals are being sold in Old Dhaka.

Stating Nimtoli and Churihatta incidents prove that our chemical management system is not up to the mark, the DCCI chief urged the government for quick implementation of "Chemical Polli".   

He also suggested for creating "Chemical Management and Safety Coordination Committee" comprising of government officials, researchers, scientists and industry for creating a safe chemical infrastructure nationally.

Director General of Bangladesh Fire Service and Civil Defence Brigadier General Md. Sazzad Hussain, was also at the event present as Special Guest.

Engr. Sirajur Rahman, Chief Chemical Management Specialist, Engineering Resource International (ERI) presented the keynote paper.
