The incumbent mayor of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh embezzled corporation's millions of taka and deposited the amounts in his own Modhumoti Bank Limited, former mayor Sayeed Khokon alleged on Saturday.
Due to his involvement in the corruption, the mayor has lost his eligibility to retain the mayoral post, he added.
Khokon made the allegation on Saturday at a human chain in front of the Supreme Court and demanded the rehabilitation and compensation of the affected traders of the Fulbaria Super Market-2.
Earlier, DSCC demolished around 911 shops built illegally in the market.
“Due to the shortage of funds the corporation could not provide salaries to its low-level employees for months”, the ex-mayor said, adding many development works of DSCC have been stalled due to fund crunch.
Condemning the demolition, Khokon said the traders were evicted without any prior notice.
Traders and their family members are going through tough times as they have lost their livelihoods, he added.
