A Jagannath University (JnU) student was stabbed and his three friends were assaulted allegedly by a teenage gang in the capital's Lalmatia in Mohammadpur.
Anurav Ashraf Rajya a student of JnU's Mathemetics department was reportedly stabbed during a heated argument between the teenagers and the students, which escalated into physical violence last week.
Victim Sajid-ul-Islam of the Fine Arts Department at DU filed a case in connection with the incident against 12 individuals and 13 others without naming them at Mohammadpur Police Station.
One of the victims is Tasmia Tabassum Nebula, a student of the Law Department of Dhaka University (DU).
Sajid stated that around 8:45 pm on Tuesday, he went to meet Anurav, Tasmia and Rafidul Haque Rahim at the D-Block ground in Lalmatia. Rafidul is a student of Fine Arts at JnU.
While the students group was sitting together, one of their bags was thrown away by one of the 10-12 intervening teenagers, who also demanded that the students leave the area.
"They threw my friend's bag for no reason. When I asked why, they told us to leave." Sajid said. "We said we could leave, but they couldn't talk to us like that," he added.
Sajid said that the teenagers threatened him and his friends, claiming influence in the area. Sajid also said that the teenagers began punching and kicking them before stabbing Anurav.
When bystanders rushed to the scene, the accused gave death threats before fleeing.
A Mohammadpur Police Station official said an investigation is underway to determine the motive behind the attack and that efforts are ongoing to arrest the suspects.
The 12 named accused in the casee are: SK Abir, Mimon Khan, Siam, Minhaj, Shukur, Sajjad, Ekramul, Sujon, Bayezid, Suman, Hriday, and Yasin.
According to the complaint, the attack was carried out under Abir's instruction. Mimon Khan, Yasin, Suman, and Sujon assaulted Sajid.
Tejgaon Division Deputy Commissioner (DC) Ibn Mizan said that the matter is being investigated with priority and that a police operation to arrest the suspects is already underway.
