Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) has expressed its utter disappointment over irregularities and corruption in the recruiting process announced by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) to meet the technical manpower shortage in public hospitals during the Covid-19 crisis.

In a statement on Monday, TIB urged the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) to take immediate action and ensure exemplary punishment for the real culprits.

At the same time, Bangladesh chapter of the Berlin-based global graft watchdog is sceptical of the transparency of the entire recruitment process, the statement points out.

In the statement, citing the media reports, TIB Executive Director Dr Iftekharuzzaman said the ordinary people are living in jeopardy due to the Covid-19 crisis along with the poor and dilapidated state of health services.

Apart from this, the existing crisis is worsening and deepening day by day as the commoners lack confidence over the quality health services, he insists.

At such a time, irregularities and corruption in the recruitment of technical manpower in the government hospitals became another major blow to public confidence in the health sector, Dr Iftekharuzzaman opined.

Paying bribe of millions of taka directly to a member of an appointment committee is just another example of the reckless corruption of officials, he argues.

In order to overcome such a situation, Dr Zaman also urged the concerned authorities to take a stern action to end the corruption.
