Transport owners and workers on Sunday warned of a strike from August 12 to realise their eight-point demand.
Leaders of Bangladesh Road Transport Owners' Association, Bangladesh Bus-Truck Owners' Association, and Bangladesh
Road Transport Workers' Federation made the announcement at a press conference in the capital's Jatiya Press Club.
Bangladesh Road Transport Owners' Association Secretary General Saiful Alam read out a written statement and presented their demands.
On July 20, the government launched a crackdown on vehicles that have exceeded their economic lifespan, he said.
He also said that the drive started about a month after the government fixed the economic lifespan of buses and minibuses at 20 years, and goods-laden vehicles, such as trucks and covered vans, at 25 years.
He said that recent drives to remove vehicles that are 20 to 25 years old have led to transport strikes in various districts, creating fears of a complete halt in their operations.
He demanded an immediate withdrawl of such drives and amendment of the road transport law. Previously on July 20, authorities were urged to address the concerns within 15 working days, or, see a three-day strike starting August 12.
Some 39,169 buses and minibuses; and 41,140 trucks, covered vans, and tankers; have exceeded their economic lifespan, according to the BRTA data as of July 16.
