A person connected to the recently-ousted Bangladeshi government, led by the Awami League, gifted a two-bedroom apartment to former prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s niece Tulip Siddiq in central London.
Tulip Siddiq is currently serving as the UK's city minister and economic secretary to the treasury.
A British news outlet said the person transferred the property near King's Cross to Tulip in 2004 for free.
According to the report, the property was initially purchased in January 2001 for £195,000. Another flat in the same building was sold for £650,000 (around Tk 98 million) in August 2023.
The donor was Abdul Motalif, a developer with ties to the Awami League. He confirmed his purchase of the property to the British media but declined to comment on what he did with it. He lives in south-east London and Companies House filings show him as the owner of a now-dissolved small property services company.
Tulip’s spokesperson said, “Any suggestion that Tulip Siddiq’s ownership of this property, or any other property is in any way linked to support for the Awami League, would be categorically wrong.”
