Wheat harvest nears end in Joypurhat

JOYPURHAT, Apr 20: Wheat harvest is nearing completion in the district.
Deputy director of DAE Shudhindranath Roy said farmers are happy as they achieved an abundant yield.
The newly-harvested wheat is also selling at a high rate in the local market, the official said, adding, the DAE provided threshing machines to the farmers to make the harvest easy.
Around 497 hectares of land were brought under the farming of wheat in the district this season.
The cultivation had started just after the harvest of T-Aman paddy in February last, said farmer Shahadat Hossain under Panchbibi upazila.
"I cultivated wheat on 33 decimals of land this season spending Tk 5,000," said farmer Arun Kumar Sarker of Purana Pool village under Panchbibi upazila. "I got around nine maunds of yield", he added.
During a visit to Madhupuker Haat under Kalai upazila this correspondent saw each maund of wheat was selling at Tk 1,200 in the retail market and Tk 1,100 in the wholesale market.
