Bangladesh secured its first-ever SAFF U-20 Championship title on Wednesday, defeating hosts Nepal 4-1 in the final. The win not only marked their first triumph against Nepal but also served as a revenge for their earlier group-stage defeat.
In the first half, Nepal dominated the play but failed to capitalise on their chances, thanks to the resilient performance of Bangladesh's goalkeeper. Just before halftime, Bangladesh was awarded a free-kick outside the penalty area. Mirajul Islam, who had been fouled, took the free-kick himself and delivered a spectacular shot that hit the post and nestled into Nepal's net, giving Bangladesh a 1-0 lead.
In the 55th minute, Bangladesh extended their lead. A cross from Asadul on the left found Asad Mollah's header, which was initially saved by the Nepalese goalkeeper but fell to Mirajul, who calmly headed the ball into the net for a 2-0 lead.
Bangladesh's dominance continued in the 71st minute with another goal, again with Mirajul's involvement. His assist set up Rabby Hossen Rahul, who scored to make it 3-0.
Nepal managed to pull one back in the 81st minute due to a defensive lapse by Bangladesh. However, Bangladesh sealed their victory in injury time, with Piash Ahmmed Nova scoring from Rahul's cross, finalising the score at 4-1.
The final whistle was greeted with wild celebrations from the Bangladeshi players and coaching staff, who had achieved a remarkable turnaround in their campaign.
