Dhaka stocks end flat after volatile trading

Dhaka stocks ended flat on Thursday after choppy trading as investors were mostly followed cautious stance ongoing earnings and dividend declarations.

Market analysts said a section of investors preferred booking profit while some others were busy rebalancing portfolio based on earnings and dividend declaration, taking the market in the flat zone.

DSEX, the prime index of the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE), settled at 4,682, inching down by 0.30 point or over the previous day.

The DS30 index, comprising blue chips, also fell 3.72 points to finish at 1,627. However, the DSE Shariah Index advanced 3.34 points to close at 1,075.

Turnover, another important indicator of the market, stood at Tk 4.05 billion, which was 9.0 per cent higher than the previous day’s turnover of Tk 3.47 billion.

A total of 125,886 trades were executed in the day’s trading session with trading volume of 136.76 million securities.

The market capitalisation of the DSE stood at Tk 3,559 billion on Thursday, from Tk 3,557 billion in the previous session.

The gainers took a modest lead over the losers as out of 352 issues traded, 185 advanced, 126 declined and 41 issues remained unchanged on the DSE trading floor.

National Tubes topped the turnover chart with shares worth Tk 188 million changing hands.

The other turnover leaders were Sonar Bangla Insurance, Northern Jute Manufacturing Company, BRAC Bank and BATBC.

Mozzafar Hossain Spinning Mills was the day’s best performer, posting a gain of 12.67 per cent while Golden Harvest Agro Industries was the worst loser, losing 17.24 per cent following its price adjustment after record date of rights share issue.

However, the port city bourse, Chittagong Stock Exchange, ended lower with its CSE All Share Price Index – CASPI-- shedding 55 points to settle at 14,221 and the Selective Categories Index - CSCX -losing 35 points to finish at 8,646.

Here too, the gainers beat losers, as 132 issues closed higher, 106 ended lower and 22 remained unchanged on the CSE trading floor.

The port city’s bourse traded 8.91 million shares and mutual fund units worth Tk 183 million in turnover.
