Bangladesh will not allow import of sacrificial animals this year, minister says

Fisheries and Livestock Minister SM Rezaul Karim has said the government will not allow the import of sacrificial animals from outside the country ahead of the coming Eid-ul Azha.

He informed that the country has a surplus stock of sacrificial animals as some 11. 9 million cattle are now ready to be sold for Eid-ul-Azha of this year.

The minister gave the information while addressing the virtual inauguration ceremony of DNCC Digital Haat on Sunday.

DNCC Digital Haat, the biggest virtual platform for selling and buying sacrificial animals ahead of Eid-ul Azha, was launched to ensure social distancing amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC), the e-Commerce Association of Bangladesh (e-CAB) and Bangladesh Dairy Farmers' Association (BDFA) as per the directions of the Ministry of Commerce launched the marketplace www.digitalhaat.net.

Some 27,000 sacrificial animals were sold from different digital platforms across the country last year at the digital platform.

The digital market has been launched keeping an online sales target of 100,000 sacrificial animals, said the speakers.

DNCC Mayor Atiqul Islam chaired the programme while Local Government and Rural Development (LGRD) Minister Md Tazul Islam was present as the chief guest.
