No cattle will be allowed to enter the country, as the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock imposed a ban on cattle import on Sunday.

Farida Akhter, adviser of the ministry, stated that cattle imports would not be permitted this year for the Eid-ul-Adha due to a surplus of livestock in the country compared to the demand. There would likely be a surplus of around 2.06 million animals this year.

She mentioned that no cattle would be allowed to enter the country through illegal channels starting Sunday, and the entry of cattle from foreign countries in any form would be completely banned.

The adviser made the announcement at a press conference, held in the ministry's conference room to assess the demand and supply of sacrificial animals, ensure their smooth transportation across remote areas, and facilitate their movement ahead of the upcoming Eid-ul-Adha, according to a release.

Under the two city corporations of the capital, 20 veterinary medical teams and two specialist medical teams would be deployed across 19 cattle markets to provide primary healthcare services.

The adviser mentioned that, as in previous years, the Department of Livestock Services has estimated the number of sacrificial animals available in the country.

This year, around 5.6 million cattle and buffaloes, 6.8 million goats and sheep, and 5,512 animals of other species - totaling 12.45 million - are expected to be available for sacrifice.

She said the government is working to prevent cattle price hikes due to extortion and has held inter-ministerial meetings to address any potential issues.
