BGMEA accords reception to newly-elected ministers, MPs from apparel sector

Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) on Thursday accorded a reception to its members who have been elected ministers, state ministers and Members of the Parliament in the 13th National Election.

A total of 17 members--three ministers, three state ministers and one adviser to the Prime Minister and the rest are MPs from the readymade garment sector.

BGMEA organised the reception programme, followed by an iftar programme at the Army Golf Club in the city.

Three ministers from the sector are Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Afroza Khanam, Housing and Public Works Minister Zakaria Taher and Commerce, Industries, Textile and Jute Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir.

Four state ministers included State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obayed Islam, State Minister for Housing and Public Works Ahmmed Sohel Manzur, State Minister for Commerce, Industries and Textile Shariful Alam and adviser to the prime minister, Mahdi Amin.

10 Members of the Parliament are Jaynul Abedin Faruque from Noakhali-2 constituency, Ershad Ullah from Chatyogram -8, SM Faisal from Habiganj -4, Md Khaled Hossain Mahbubfrom Brahmanbaria -3, Md Abul Kalam from Comilla-9, Md Lutfar Rahman from Tangail-4, Md Zakir Hossain from Mymensing-5, Md Abdullah from Munsiganj-1, Md Abdul Hannan from Chandpur-4 and Md Shahadat Hossain from Lakshmipur-1 respectively.

Presided over by BGMEA president Mahmud Hasan Khan, the event was attended by its vice presidents Selim Rahman, Inamul Haq Khan, Rezwan Selim, Shehab ud Doza Chowdhury, Vidya Amrit Khan, former presidents AK Azad, Anwar ul Alam Chowdhury, and Faruque Hassan, among others.

Speaking there, the BGMEA president urged members of the Parliament to discuss the challenges and the issues the sector has been undergoing during their parliamentary talks, along with their own localities, and national issues discussion at the parliament.

He further stressed the need for measures to diversify export baskets to reduce dependency on single products.

The BGMEA leaders in their speeches also sought long-term policy support to help the sector flourish further.
