Members of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) are casting votes to elect a new board of directors for the apex trade body for the 2023-25 tenure.

Voting in the biennial election started at 9:00 am and will until 4:00 pm without any break at the Bangabandhu International Conference Centre in Dhaka, according to local newspapers.

The votes will be counted and the names of the elected candidates will be announced on Monday. Elected directors will elect FBCCI President, Senior Vice-President, and six Vice-Presidents on next August 2.

Mahbubul Alam, the representative of the Chittagong Chamber of Commerce and Industry, and Mir Nizam Uddin Ahmed, the representative of Bangladesh Electrical Association, are contesting from two panels in today’s election.

According to FBCCI rules, the next president will be elected from the chamber group, which is led by Mahbubul Alam.

Out of the total 80 posts of the directors, 17 from the chamber group and 17 from the association group are usually nominated. The remaining 46 are usually elected (23 from the chamber group and 23 from the association group).

This year, 23 candidates from the chamber group were already elected unopposed. For this reason, 1,990 voters will elect 23 candidates out of 49 from the association group.

Out of 49 candidates, 23 are contesting as director candidates from the panel of trade unions, 23 from the combined trade union panel, and 3 are contesting as independent candidates.
