In a vibrant and festive atmosphere across Narayanganj and Dhaka, the Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA) election concluded with a resounding victory for the Progressive Knit Alliance panel, led by Mohammad Hatem.
Out of 572 eligible voters, 431 cast their ballots, marking a turnout of 75.35%. The Progressive Knit Alliance panel clinched all 35 director positions, underscoring their widespread support within the knitwear industry, according to local media.
Voting took place uninterrupted from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, setting a new benchmark for engagement in BKMEA's electoral history. This election saw 38 candidates vying for the 35 director roles, with 35 representing the Progressive Knit Alliance and three running as independents.
Following the announcement of results, jubilant celebrations erupted among supporters and members of the winning panel. Many industry stakeholders view this decisive win as a testament to Mohammad Hatem and his team's longstanding dedication and service to the sector. They anticipate that this leadership will further invigorate BKMEA, steering it towards a more dynamic and business-friendly future.
In his victory speech, Mohammad Hatem expressed gratitude for the trust placed in his panel, stating, "This triumph reflects our unwavering commitment to BKMEA members. We pledge to address all challenges faced by knitwear businesses, engaging with the government to negotiate and implement necessary measures."
The newly elected leadership is set to serve a two-year term from 2025 to 2027, a period during which they aim to play a pivotal role in advancing the knitwear industry. Business leaders believe that this election marks not just a change in leadership but also heralds a new era of optimism and proactive engagement within BKMEA.
