Mahbubur Rahman, President of the International Chamber of Commerce, Bangladesh (ICCB), has expressed his grief over the fatal crash of a Bangladesh Air Force training jet at Milestone School and College in Uttara, which resulted in the deaths of Pilot Flight Lieutenant Toukir Islam, coordinator Mrs Mahreen Chowdhury, and 30 students.
In separate condolence letters addressed to Air Chief Marshal Sheikh Abdul Hannan and Milestone School Principal Mohammad Ziaul Alam, the ICCB President conveyed his deep sorrow and solidarity on behalf of the organisation and its members.
In his letter to the Air Chief, dated Wednesday, Mahbubur Rahman paid tribute to the bravery of the late Flight Lt Toukir Islam, who made an all-out effort to divert the aircraft away from a densely populated urban area, potentially preventing further casualties.
“We also appreciate the immediate steps taken by you in caring for the injured children and others,” Mr Rahman noted, while praying for the early recovery of all those undergoing treatment.
The ICCB President also made several recommendations, urging the Air Force to extend long-term financial and medical support to the victims and their families, provide employment opportunities for families in need, and rebuild the school building with full facilities.
In his message to Principal Mohammad Ziaul Alam, issued on Tuesday, Mr Rahman expressed heartfelt condolences for the tragic loss of 30 students and the school’s coordinator, praising the courage shown by the late Mrs Mahreen Chowdhury in saving the lives of many children.
“Please convey our appreciation and gratitude to Mr Monsur Helal (husband of the late coordinator) for the courage shown by Mrs Mahreen in saving so many lives by risking her own,” the letter said.
The ICCB chief extended sympathy to the entire Milestone School community, acknowledging the devastating impact of the tragedy on students, staff, and families.
