The Bangladesh Jute Spinners Association (BJSA) has elected Tapas Pramanik as its chairman and Sk Farook Hossain as vice chairman.
The new executive committee of the association for 2025-2026 and 2026-2027 was formed at its 46th Annual General Meeting held at a city convention centre recently.
The minutes of the previous meeting, the annual report, and the audit report were approved at the AGM.
Mr Pramanik said the jute industry currently faces several key challenges.
"One of the major issues is the excessive taxation imposed on the sector, which includes a 1.0 per cent source tax on raw jute, a 1.0 per cent source tax on export earnings, and a 10 per cent source tax on incentives," he said.
He said the government has increased revenue fees for jute product exports from 10 paisa (Tk0.1) to 50 paisa (Tk 0.5), further burdening the industry.
Another critical problem is the persistent delays in duty drawbacks and VAT refunds for jute exports, which disrupt cash flow and business operations, said Mr Pramanik.
