All universities and colleges in India were asked to set up ‘selfie points’ with images of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the background.
Recently, India’s University Grants Commission gave directives to the authorities of universities and colleges ahead of the 2024 general election in the country, according to The Telegraph Online.
The regulator also asked the campus authorities to encourage students and visitors to take selfies at these points and share them on media platforms.
India’s UGC described the idea would creating a buzz around ‘India’s achievements in various fields’ thus ‘fostering a sense of collective pride’.
However, several academics in the country accused the regulator of drafting academic institutions into a ‘cult-building’ exercise they should ‘have nothing to do with’.
