Politics in West Bengal has taken a dramatic turn as the faction led by Uluberia Purba MLA Ritabrata Banerjee, calling itself the "real Trinamool", announced the suspension of party national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee and removed Mamata Banerjee from the post of party chairperson.
The development came just days after the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress expelled Ritabrata Banerjee on charges of anti-party activities, according to Indian media reports.
In a retaliatory move, the dissident group convened a meeting in New Town on Monday, formed a new party committee, and initiated disciplinary action against Abhishek Banerjee.
According to the rebel camp, the meeting was attended by 60 MLAs and 70 councillors of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation.
The faction appointed Howrah Madhya MLA Arup Roy as the new chairperson, replacing Mamata Banerjee.
The group said the meeting was called to address what it described as a "constitutional crisis" within the party.
