Former Chattogram North District BNP convenor Golam Akbar Khondakar has asserted that the recent wave of killings in Raozan stems from extortion, encroachment, and disputes over the sand trade rather than political rivalry.

Speaking after the scrutiny of nomination papers at the Chattogram deputy commissioner’s office on Saturday, Akbar dismissed claims that political divisions led to the bloodshed.

"The violence in Raozan was not triggered by political friction or a struggle for dominance. It was entirely fuelled by illegal occupation, the sand and soil trade, and extortion in brick fields," he said.

He clarified that the conflict did not involve two BNP factions fighting for control, a sentiment he claimed is shared by the local population.

According to Akbar, nearly 18 people have been killed since Aug 5, 2024, with 13 to 14 of those deaths directly linked to extortion and financial disputes.

“This isn’t a party issue. No criminal, extortionist, or murderer can be part of the party. They use it for personal interests.”

The comments follow the successful verification of nomination papers for both Akbar and Giasuddin Quader Chowdhury for the Chattogram-6 (Raozan) constituency, both of whom were declared valid candidates.

Acknowledging the potential for election-related tension, Akbar suggested that firm intervention from the administration and law-enforcement agencies is essential to alleviate public fear.

“I believe firm steps by the administration and law enforcing agencies can reduce fear. I will remain steadfast in my party’s decision.”
