The number of employed people in the country fell to 68.09 million in the fourth quarter of 2024, down from 71.11 million in the same period of 2023, according to the latest report by the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS).
This means that approximately 3.02 million people lost their jobs during the October-December period of 2024 compared to the previous year, the BBS revealed in its provisional Quarterly Labour Force Survey released on Sunday.
The unemployment rate during the reported period also rose to 4.63 per cent, up by 0.68 percentage points from 3.95 per cent in the same quarter of 2023.
The annual unemployment rate rose to 4.48 per cent in 2024, up from 4.15 per cent in 2023, driven largely by an unusual spike in job losses during the final quarter of the year. The historical data of the BBS reveals that the unemployment rate in the fiscal year 2002-2003 was 4.32 per cent and the rate varied from 3 per cent to 4.69 per cent in the following years.
The unemployment rate reached the highest level in 23 years in the October-December period of last year.
