Government is contemplating a plan to build an underwater tunnel under the Buriganga to ease hardship of commuters on each side of the river.

Shipping Minister Shahjahan Khan came up with the disclosure in a meeting with the BIWTA officials at the terminal Bhaban of Sadarghat in Dhaka.

He also directed the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) to take necessary steps regarding the matter.

"A new modern launch terminal will be built at Shasanghat near Postagola and for the terminal a 2.5-kilometre road from Sadarghat to Shasanghat financed by the BIWTA is under-construction," said the Minister.

Passenger harassment will be minimised significantly after implementing the terminal, he hoped, adding, "The splendor of Sadarghat terminal has returned due to the effective steps of the Shipping Ministry and the BIWTA. The launch terminal has been made hawker-free."

According to a UNB report, he said the number of terminal building, parking yard, and pontoons were raised to ensure passenger satisfaction.
