The Chattogram Customs House (CCH), the largest revenue-collection centre in Bangladesh, collected a total of Tk 754.32 billion in revenue in the last fiscal year (2024-25).
The CCH had collected a total of Tk688.66 billion revenue in the previous fiscal (2023-24).
The collection of revenue of CCH has increased around 9.71 per cent higher than the previous year. Earlier, CCH had collected a total of Tk614.6472 billion revenue in the fiscal year 2022-23.
The target of CCH in revenue income for the fiscal year 2024-25 was Tk804.02 billion but Tk754.32 billion was collected. That is, there is a deficit of Tk49.70 billion from the target.
It may be mentioned that CCH could not achieve its target at any time in the last several financial years. The target of CCH in revenue income for the fiscal year 2023-24 was Tk776.16 billion but Tk688.66 billion was collected. That is, there is a deficit of Tk87.50 billion from the target. In the financial year 2022-23, there was a deficit of Tk127.42 billion. In the financial year 2021-22, there was a deficit of Tk49.16 billion and in the financial year 2020-21, the deficit was Tk127.27 billion and in the financial year 2019-20 the deficit was Tk164.45 billion from achieving the target.
According to the CCH officials, many traders could not open LCs in the recent financial year due to the dollar crisis in the country.
As a result, the import of goods was not as expected. Moreover, the import of products with high tariffs was also discouraged.
As a result, revenue could not reach the target. But the amount of revenue generated is sufficient.
Besides, the pen down programme of the officials of CCH also hampered the collection of revenue in last fiscal.
It may be mentioned that CCH collects duty on imported goods which are imported through Chittagong sea Port. Chittagong sea port handled 92 per cent of the country's import and export trade. Apart from the country's main seaport, the CCH also collects duty on goods coming through Shah Amanat International Airport of Chattogram.
