FDI drops by around 14pc last year

Net inflow of foreign direct investment (FDI) in the country declined by 13.80 per cent in the last calendar year, according to the latest statistics of Bangladesh Bank.

It showed that the net inflow of FDI came down to US$3,000 million (or $3.0 billion) in 2023 from $3,479.45 million (or around $3.48 billion) in 2022.

Central bank statistics also showed that both the equity, fresh injection of capital by the foreign entities to be more precise, and the reinvested earnings of the existing multinational entities (MNEs) in the country declined in the last year.

FDI in the form of equity dropped to $705.84 million in the last year from $1,022.63 million in 2022. Net reinvested earnings also dropped to $2,209.66 million from $2,514.97 million during the period under review.

Intra-company loans, however, increased to $88.90 million last year, after a decline of $57.65 million in the previous year.

Central bank statistics further showed that the gross inflow of FDI reached at $3,969.76 million in the last year whereas the amount of disinvestment stood at $965.36 million.
