More than 1.7 million taxpayers submitted their income tax returns online in the fiscal year 2024-25, marking a significant rise in digital adoption for tax compliance, according to the National Board of Revenue (NBR).

In a press release issued on Monday, the NBR said a total of 1,712,492 taxpayers filed their income tax returns online, while 2,165,321 taxpayers completed e-return registrations during the fiscal year.

The revenue authority termed this shift a “landmark step” under its broader automation programme, aimed at making tax services more accessible, efficient, and taxpayer-friendly. It said the simplified online return submission system has received a strong response from taxpayers, who are increasingly filing their returns voluntarily.

The NBR said it remains committed to delivering uninterrupted services year-round, including the provision for instant online issuance of income tax certificates.

Additionally, under Section 180 of the Income Tax Act, 2023, taxpayers are allowed to submit revised returns online within 180 days of filing the original return if they detect any errors or omissions. This facility, the NBR noted, can be accessed conveniently from home.

The tax authority thanked all who submitted returns online and encouraged taxpayers to continue using the year-round digital services for return filing and certificate collection.
