Pay carbon tax for another car

The budget for fiscal year 2023-24 has proposed 'carbon tax' for the first time for the taxpayers who own more than one motor vehicle.

According to the proposed Finance Bill, carbon tax ranging from Tk 25,000 to Tk 0.35 million has been proposed for each after owning the first motor car from 1,500cc or 75kW to 3,500cc or 175kW.

The bill elaborated the vehicles other than bus, minibus, coaster, prime mover, tank lorry, pickup

van, human hauler, auto-rickshaw and motorcycle for the tax. It proposed to pay Tk 25,000 for 1500cc or 75kW car, Tk 50,000 for above 1,500cc to 2,000cc or 100kW and Tk 75,000 for above 2,000cc or 100kW to 2,500cc or 125kW.

Owners having above 2,500cc or 125kW to 3,000cc or 150kW cars might pay Tk 0.15 million while Tk 0.2 million for above 3,000cc or 150kW to 3,500cc or 175kW and Tk 0.35 million for above 3,500cc or 175kW.

Carbon tax would be payable to the authorities concerned at the time of vehicle registration, renewal of registration and fitness renewal.
