Trade deficit ups slightly in July-October

Country’s merchandise trade deficit with the rest of the world increased slightly in the first four months of the current fiscal year (FY20).

Statistics released by the central bank today (Tuesday) showed that the merchandise trade gap reached $5.62 billion in the July-October period of the current fiscal year, which was $5.32 billion in the same period of the past fiscal year (FY19).

Thus the merchandise trade gap increased by 5.60 per cent in the July-October period of FY 20.

However, both the exports and imports declined in the first four months of FY20.

Bangladesh Bank statistics also showed that the gap in services trade declined moderately during the period under review.

Deficit in services trade stood at around $1.16 billion in the first four months of the current fiscal year, which was $1.29 billion in the same period of FY19.
