The grim picture of dengue outbreak continued to worsen as the total death toll of the mosquito-borne viral infection this year stood at 706 with 15 additional casualties on Friday.

Of the new deaths, 11 were from Dhaka. Of the total fatalities, 508 occurred in Dhaka, which remains the epicentre of the dengue outbreak, according to health directorate.

The directorate also reported 1,876 new hospitalisations as of 8:00 am Friday, including 842 from Dhaka, in its daily update.

The total dengue caseload has risen to 142,587. Of these cases, 65,014 were reported in Dhaka, added the health directorate.

Currently, 9,730 people are receiving treatment in hospitals across the country, with 4,265 of them being from Dhaka.

Out of the total admitted patients, 132,151 have recovered and returned home, including 60,241 from Dhaka.

Last year, 281 people died due to dengue, marking the second-highest toll in the country's history.

Bangladesh is experiencing its most severe dengue outbreak on record, which is exerting immense pressure on the healthcare system, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

While cases are starting to decline in the capital, they are increasing in other parts of the country, the WHO reported.

The WHO is actively supporting authorities in strengthening surveillance, laboratory capacity, clinical management, vector control, risk communication and community engagement.

"We have trained doctors and deployed experts on the ground. We have also provided supplies to test for dengue and to support care for patients," said Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director-general of the WHO at the media briefing on Wednesday.
