New Zealand's gross domestic product (GDP) grew 0.6 per cent over the year in the December 2018 quarter, Statistics New Zealand (Stats NZ) figures showed on Thursday.

"Growth in this quarter was led by the service industries, contributing a 0.9 per cent rise," said Stats NZ senior manager Gary Dunnet, adding that the goods-producing industries grew 0.2 per cent.

States NZ recorded 10 of the 16 industries with increases, leaving a mixed growth among industries, reports Xinhua.

Transport, postal and warehousing (up 3.2 per cent) led the service industries along with retail and accommodation (up 2.5 per cent), while primary industries struggled across the board.

"Reduced livestock production had an impact on agriculture, while mining activity was still on its way from a partial recovery last quarter," Dunnet said.

The annual GDP growth for the year ended December 2018 was 2.8 per cent.
