"A little while ago, the Indian armed forces launched 'OPERATION SINDOOR', hitting terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir from where terrorist attacks against India have been planned and directed," the Indian government said in a statement.

It says, "nine sites have been targeted".

"Our actions have been focused, measured and non-escalatory in nature. No Pakistani military facilities have been targeted. India has demonstrated considerable restraint in the selection of targets and the method of execution.

The statement adds that the attack was ordered after last month's deadly militant attack on tourists in India-administered Kashmir. According to the Pakistan Air Force, Pakistan has shot down two Indian aircraft as well.

A spokesperson for Pakistan's military says Islamabad "will respond to this [attack] at a time and place of its choosing," quoted in the BBC.

"All of our air force jets are airborne. This is a shameful and cowardly attack that was carried out from within India's airspace," the spokesman adds.
