Interim govt to present FY26 budget on June 2, bypassing traditional Thursday slot

The national budget for the 2025–26 fiscal year will be announced on June 2 (Monday), deviating from the customary Thursday schedule in June. The size of the upcoming budget is expected to be Tk 7.90 trillion.

The announcement will take place ahead of Eid-ul-Adha holidays, which are set to begin in the second week of June.

This decision was made at a meeting of the Financial, Monetary, and Exchange Rate Coordination Council and the Asset Management Committee, held on Tuesday at the Secretariat. The meeting was chaired by Economic Adviser Dr Salehuddin Ahmed, who will present the budget on behalf of the interim government led by Professor Muhammad Yunus.

As no national parliament is currently in place, the economic adviser will present the budget via televised speech, to be formalised through a presidential ordinance.

Compared to the current fiscal year’s Tk 7.97 trillion budget, the proposed budget reflects a Tk 70 billion reduction, signaling a possibly more conservative financial approach by the interim government.

This will mark the first televised budget speech since the 2007–08 fiscal year, when former caretaker government adviser Mirza Azizul Islam delivered two budgets via national broadcast.
