Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has underscored Bangladesh’s commitment to nurturing its ties with India to further propel the country’s development.
The premier praised bilateral relations between the neighbouring countries as a model of international cooperation and mutual growth during the inauguration ceremony of three projects financed by Indian loans on Wednesday.
In a virtual event, Hasina and her Indian counterpart Narendra Modi launched the second unit of the Akhaura-Agartala dual gauge railway, the Khulna-Mongla port railway construction project, and the Maitree Super Thermal Power Project in Bagerhat’s Rampal.
“The joint inauguration of these important projects represents the unique friendship and mutual cooperation between our two friendly nations,” Hasina said.
“Over the years, we’ve achieved successes in various areas of bilateral cooperation. These include enhancing communication systems, boosting trade and commerce, fostering development cooperation, promoting cultural exchanges and facilitating people-to-people connections.
Hasina pointed to accomplishments in the fields of power and communication as shining examples of bilateral achievements.
She expressed her gratitude to the Indian government for its substantial contributions to the development of the power and communication sectors in Bangladesh since her party, the Awami League, assumed power in 2009.
She highlighted the potential of the newly inaugurated projects to enhance the well-being of both nations’ citizens.
“I believe that these projects will play a pivotal role in regional connectivity and energy security. The Maitree Super Thermal Power Plant will significantly contribute to Bangladesh’s energy security by providing affordable and reliable electricity, reducing our reliance on expensive power sources, and ensuring grid stability.”
Hasina expressed hope that the Akhaura-Agartala rail link would stimulate economic growth and foster trade and connectivity between both countries, particularly with India’s northeastern regions.
She also emphasised the significance of the Khulna-Mongla port rail link project in directly connecting Mongla port to the existing rail network, making it easier and more cost-effective to transport imported goods to northeast India.
The premier also acknowledged the Indian government’s support in implementing these projects and highlighted the willingness of Bangladesh to open up Chattogram and Mongla ports, as well as Chattogram airport, for India’s use, fostering regional cooperation.
Hasina expressed her gratitude to Modi for inviting her to the G20 summit in India and for the hospitality extended during her visit to Delhi. She also thanked India for its efforts in strengthening the friendship between the two nations and recalled India’s support during the Liberation War.
