Tax evasion in Bangladesh climbed to Tk 2.26 trillion in 2023: CPD study

Tax evasion in Bangladesh amounted to approximately Tk 2.26 trillion in 2023, according to a study by the Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD), supported by Christian Aid.

The findings were revealed on Monday during the launch of a study focused on corporate taxation in Bangladesh. The think tank reported that tax evasion has seen a significant increase since 2011.

In 2012, the estimated amount of evaded tax was Tk 965 billion, which more than doubled over the past decade.

The CPD also made several policy recommendations, including capping the minimum tax rate at no more than 15 per cent. Additionally, it advised against offering wholesale tax breaks for capital market investments, suggesting that such incentives should be made conditional.
