34 JU students receive 'Bangabandhu Sports Education Scholarship'

In recognition of their contributions to sports alongside their education, 34 students of Jahangirnagar University (JU) have been awarded the 'Bangabandhu Sports Education Scholarship-2023,' which was presented for the first time by the 'Bangabandhu Krirasebi Kallyan Foundation' (BKKF) under the Ministry of Youth and Sports.

The scholarship was awarded at the Shahid Captain Sheikh Kamal Auditorium of the National Sports Council on Tuesday, November 7, in the evening. Minister of Education Dr Dipu Moni, MP, as the chief guest, handed over a check of Tk 24 thousand to each player nominated for the scholarship.

Md Mahmudul Hasan Kiron, Arshad Habib Bishal, Md. Tanvir Siddiqui Saimun, Noor Uddin Sajal, Farhan Imtiaz, and Md. Sohail Rana has been nominated for the football event. In cricket, Ashraful Islam Siam, Md. Mehedi Hasan Rasel, Md. Humayun Kabir, Md. JU has nominated Uday Mahmud, SynthiaSylvi, MrttikaChambugong, and SifatAraRumki. 

Md. Rasel Mahmud, Md. FatemaTuzJahura, Md. Sabikun Nahar, Tanzina Akhter Sharmi, Md. Rakibul Islam, Md. Sifat Farhan Sani and Abdullah Bin Ahmed were awarded for athletics. Mominul Islam, SM Abu Kavi Sadat, AnghoKhumi, Uting Mong Chak, JasaimongMarma, Baby Khatun, and Shahnaz ParveenShanu were awarded in the handball event.

Mansibur Rahman Sadh and Mohammad Walid Hasan were awarded in basketball. Shazneen Islam was awarded in badminton. Agnijita de Sejuti, SyedaAlviKhorshed, and PaongBom were awarded scholarships in table tennis. 

Md. Zahid Ahsan Russell, State Minister of the Ministry of Youth and Sports and Chairman of BangabandhuKrirasebiKallyan Foundation, presided over the event. The secretary of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Dr Mohiuddin Ahmed, Vice-Chancellor of Dhaka University, Professor Dr ASM Maksud Kamal, and Principal of Holycross High Girls School, Sister Kolpona Costa, were present as special guests.

One of the scholarship recipients, Sadat Kavi, a fourth-year student in the Department of Law and Justice, expressed, "I actively participate in various university and national-level handball competitions while balancing my studies. This scholarship will motivate us to continue pursuing sports in the future. At Jahangirnagar University, 34 outstanding athletes in sports such as cricket, football, badminton, basketball, handball, table tennis, and athletics have been awarded this scholarship. Beyond academics and research, we aim to elevate Jahangirnagar University's reputation in the sports arena within the country."

The Vice-Chancellor of Jahangirnagar University, Prof. Dr. Md. Nurul Alam, congratulated the scholarship recipients. This information was shared through a press release from the Public Relations Office. According to the announcement, in a congratulatory message, the Vice Chancellor said that this scholarship would serve as a source of motivation for the athletes to perform even better. He encouraged students to maintain a balance between their academic studies and sports. 

"Regular sports and physical exercise are essential to maintain a good health and building a healthy nation", he remarked. 

Notably, this marks the first time the 'Bangabandhu Sports Education Scholarship' has been awarded to students who have demonstrated achievements in sports. 

Students from grades 5 to 10 received Tk 12,000 annually, while students from the 11th grade to the university level received Tk 24,000 per annum. A total of 1,000 students from primary to university levels across the country have been granted this scholarship, with the government allocating a total of 1 crore 83 lakh 96 thousand taka for this initiative.
