Bangladesh, China to boost cooperation in emerging technologies and workforce skills

Bangladesh and China to foster stronger ties in technology transfer and skills development, expert says at North South University (NSU) at a program today (Tuesday) titled ‘Dhaka China Day 2024’ jointly organized by the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Bangladesh and NSU.

As the chief guest, Brigadier General (Retd.) M Sakhawat Hussain, Adviser to the Ministry of Textiles and Jute and the Ministry of Shipping, graced the event, according to a press release. 

Mr. Yao Wen, Ambassador of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China to the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, and Mr. Azim Uddin Ahmed, Chairman of the NSU Board of Trustees, joined as special guests.

Other dignitaries included Mrs Yasmin Kamal and Mr Aziz Al Kaiser, members of the NSU Board of Trustees, Professor Abdur Rob Khan, Treasurer and acting Pro Vice-Chancellor, and Ma Xioyan, Director of the Confucius Institute at NSU. The session was chaired by Professor Abdul Hannan Chowdhury, Vice Chancellor of NSU.

In his opening remarks, Dr. Bulbul Siddiqi, Director of the Confucius Institute at NSU, said, “Bangladesh and China share a deep-rooted history of friendship. Today’s event marks a significant milestone in strengthening our cultural and educational ties, and we are proud to host the first-ever Dhaka-China Day celebration at NSU.”

Brigadier General (Retd.) M Sakhawat Hussain stated, "China has been one of Bangladesh’s closest friends for a long time, and our relationship has grown stronger over the years. There are many more ways we can work together. I encourage the Chinese Ambassador to explore partnership opportunities in the jute sector, which is very important for Bangladesh's economy."

Mr. Yao Wen said, “Cultural exchange is a bridge that brings people closer together. Bangladesh and China already share a rich cultural heritage. Through festivals like Dhaka China Day, we can deepen our ties and foster a new era of collaboration and friendship between our countries.”

Professor Abdul Hannan Chowdhury said, “As the first university in Bangladesh to establish a Confucius Institute, we have built a strong partnership with China. Our student exchange programs with Chinese universities are thriving, and we are excited to expand our cooperation in areas such as skills development and technological innovation.”

The day’s highlights included cultural performances headlined by a troupe from Yunnan, China.

Students from NSU, the Confucius Institute at NSU, the Confucius Institute at Dhaka University, and the Bangladesh Wushu Federation also delivered stunning performances.

Throughout the day, attendees enjoyed Chinese cultural experiences at the NSU Plaza areas, where booths showcased traditional Chinese crafts, cuisine, and cultural exhibits, the release adds.
