The Bangladesh Educational and Counselling Psychology Society (BECPS) has officially recognised four psychologists as full-fledged professional psychologists for completing their MS and MPhil degrees in educational psychology and counselling psychology.
The recognition was announced at the society's annual general meeting (AGM), held on Friday at Dhaka University's (DU) Senate Building. The meeting was presided over by BECPS President Prof Shahin Islam.
Mostaq Ahmed Imran was recognised as an educational psychologist; and Sadeka Banu, Raufun Nahar, and Maryam Sultana were recognised as counselling psychologists.
BECPS confers professional recognition every year on individuals who complete MS or MPhil degrees in educational or counselling psychology. All four recipients received their degrees from DU.
The AGM began with a workshop on mental health services, conducted by psychologist Prof Shahin Islam.
Around 150 psychologists from home and abroad participated in the meeting.
At the end of the session, the organisation announced a new 15-member executive committee for the tenure 2025-2027, electing Prof Dr Mehzabin Haque as president and Dr Md Azharul Islam as general secretary.
General Secretary Dr Azharul Islam highlighted the activities of BECPS. He said mental health services in Bangladesh are likely to come under a formal registration system soon, similar to international standards. "Our organisation has already started practicing this system. Once the registration process begins in the country, it will become easier for the psychologists associated with BECPS," he added.
