Chittagong University has appointed marketing teacher Professor Hossain Shaid Shohrowardhy as its new proctor.
The university’s registrar office issued the official notification appointing him as proctor for the next year on Sunday, bdnews24.com reports.
On Sept 22 of last year, the CU administration had appointed Prof Tanvir Mohammad Hayder Arif of the Banking and Insurance Department as proctor for one year. As such, Sunday was the last day of his tenure.
On Sept 10, nine university students went on a hunger strike demanding the resignation of Tanvir. After a continuous 52-hour hunger strike, Vice-Chancellor Prof Muhammad Yeahia broke the students' fast on the afternoon of Sept 12, assuring them that their demands would be met.
During his year-long tenure, Tanvir faced criticism for multiple reasons, including making “controversial” statuses on Facebook.
Recently, after a clash between locals and students on Aug 30 and 31, students went on a hunger strike demanding a safe campus and the resignation of the proctor.
